Milica Bravacic / The Wall of the World
by Chakè Matossian
In her pictorial work 'Tile Trails', Milica Bravacic has embarked on some genuine construction work, combining the gesture of the artist and that of the worker building a wall, or rather covering it. Milica took earthenware tiles as her point of departure: this is a peculiar material, as it exists in a large number of cultures and has been used over the centuries. The artist shows how from Antiquity to the present day, from China to Mexico by way of Persia, Portugal or the Netherlands, earthenware tiles or 'azulejos' have travelled all over, offering all sorts of variations of colours and interpretation in their motifs. Milica Bravacic’s project questions what is at stake in walls, and aims through that questioning to reconstruct a vision of humanity. Walls thereby stop being marks of a delimitation, a separation, an exclusion, becoming instead the support of a visibility uniting humanity through technique and the care of beauty. /read more
